OCTOBER 2020

The resumption of the capture campaigns of European mink on the Charente river upstream of Angoulême has been successful! The LIFE VISON teams have indeed captured two new individuals.

First telemetric tracking of a young male and an adult female

The October catching campaign between Marsac and Montignac-Charente allowed to detect and equip with transmitters two unmarked individuals: a young male, Gwenn, born in spring, and an adult female, Mellea, having already successfully bred.

Their daily follow-up during 5 to 6 months will allow to complete the data already collected on the male mink Badu followed on the same sector from March to September 2020 (see newsletter n°2), and to compare these three individuals between them: size and location of home ranges, spatial and temporal mobility, types of daytime caches used according to the seasons, and for the female, behavior during gestation and at the time of calving.

MARCH 2020
A new European mink, called Roumia, was captured and tagged in the Rochefort marshes on Monday 24 February.

Roumia joins the list of European mink marked under the LIFE VISON program

A male European Mink, named Roumia by our teams, was caught for the first time in late February. In good health and weighing 850g, Roumia was immediately released with a chip to allow his identification during potential recaptures.

New capture campaigns scheduled for March

Capture campaigns are planned throughout March in the Rochefort marshes and in the Charente valley upstream of Angoulême. Goals ? Continue to characterize the sectors of populations already known (number and sex of individuals, etc.), and capture at least one female per sector, in order to equip it with a transmitter and follow it by telemetry during the reproduction period. The data collected will be essential to protect the breeding sites.

MARCH 2020
2020 has started off well! Two European mink, already known to LIFE VISON teams, were able to be equipped with a radio tracking transmitter. The objective? Follow these individuals in order to locate their daily resting places and their hunting sites.

« Popeye » and « Badu », the first European minks of the LIFE VISON followed by radio tracking

The capture campaigns launched in January and February in the two identified population sectors, allowed the recapture of four male mink already marked.

Two of them, in particularly good condition, were chosen to be equipped with a transmitter: the mink Popeye (marked in March 2019) in the Rochefort marshes, and the mink Badu (marked in November 2018) on the Charente valley upstream of Angoulême. The data collected by telemetry will make it possible to know the size of their home ranges, to precisely characterize the daytime roosts used for their rest, but also to map the environments exploited during the hunting phases thanks to night activity monitoring.

First results rich in lessons

The daily monitoring undertaken for several weeks shows that Popeye and Badu are very active during this rutting period, and regularly travel great distances, giving our teams a hard time. For example, Badu, whose home range already extends for almost 25 km along the Charente river, covers it entirely in 2 to 3 days, with some stages of ten kilometers between two consecutive lodgings. These initial data confirm the need to protect and secure large areas for the benefit of the species.

FEBRUARY 2018

New sights of European mink were recorded in the Rochefort marshes and upstream of Angoulême using indirect detection equipment.

A successful device with bait in natural lands owned by the LPO within Rochefort marshes

For several months, an innovative device of indirect detection has been tested on some sites of the LIFE area. A bait consisting of fish oil is installed near a photo trap. By analysing the photos, the LIFE VISON teams were able to discover several shots of European mink!

Footprints and a photo of European mink, this time in Saint-Yrieix-sur-Charente

The fingerprint tunnels deployed in January on the Charente upstream of Angoulême revealed the occurrence of European mink 15 km downstream from the data recorded in Varsin December. Two tunnels separated by 3 km were used, including one on two occasions, on which the installation of a photo trap made it possible to take a visitor snapshot.

An Otter and a Genet near the tunnel were also filmed.

JANUARY 2019

A photo trap, installed between Vars and La Chapelle, filmed a European mink in its natural habitat..

A nice Christmas gift for LIFE VISON teams!

On this stretch of Charente River, some twenty kilometres long, the GREGE teams recorded a dozen sights in several fingerprint tunnels between September and the end of December. Despite the floods that took away several materials, a photo trap placed in front of a busy tunnel made it possible to film an individual a few days before Christmas.
