The European mink, a secretive species

To create and launch a conservation programme can be difficult when there is a lack of knowledge about the studied species. Thus, one of the objectives of the LIFE VISON is to collect data about the European mink ecology and biology.

In order to update the distribution maps of the European mink in the Charente river catchment, traps such as footprint tracking tunnels or catch-and-release-live-animal cages have been implemented throughout the study area.

When individuals are caught, they are micro-chipped, released and then monitored by radio-tracking to determine their breeding areas and their suitable habitat.

Expected results:

  • Updated map of the European mink distribution
  • Determination and prioritization of the habitats of interest
  • Characterisation of the breeding sites such as environmental parameters or floral composition
  • Characterisation of the suitable habitat for the European mink
